Description
This consists of the lower half of the oesophagus, showing extensive ulceration, leaving only
islands of intact squamous epithelium. At the cardia, there are several irregular tears, but it is not
possible to be sure whether these are artefact, or whether they were present in life.
History
This man was a sickness beneficiary, and was found collapsed in the street; he was dead
on arrival in hospital. His death was ascribed to acute left ventricular failure, secondary to
hypertensive heart disease; at the time of death, he had a blood alcohol level of 270 mg./100 ml.
